You sleep through the night and wake up tired. You feel tired all the time now, and a task that used to be quick takes the afternoon. By evening you are too flat to enjoy the things you were looking forward to.
People tell you to rest more, and you would if it worked.
The Bible has more to say about tiredness than most people expect, including about people who were worn out while doing exactly what God asked of them.
The short answer
Constant tiredness has more than one cause, and the Bible treats it as part of being human. Jesus got tired.
"Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well."
John 4:6The Son of God walked until he was tired, and he sat down. Tiredness is no sign of weak faith, so the more useful question is why you are tired, because the answer decides what will help.
Start with your body
If the tiredness has lasted for weeks, see a doctor before you pray harder. Low iron, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, poor sleep, and depression can all look like being tired all the time. Several of these can be checked with a blood test.
Looking after your body is part of faith. Paul told Timothy to take something for his stomach and his frequent illnesses (1 Timothy 5:23).
Tiredness from carrying too much for too long
Some tiredness has no physical cause. It builds up from carrying something for a long time, and it often looks like this.
You have not had an unbroken night's sleep since your parent became ill. You are covering for a team that is short-staffed, and the plan to catch up keeps getting pushed back. You are the person everyone calls, and your phone has not been quiet in a long time.
This kind of tiredness is easy to hide. You are still getting everything done, so nobody around you knows what it costs.
Constant stress wears you down the same way. You lie awake going over tomorrow's problems. You wake early with a tight stomach before the day has started. You stay on edge all day, so even a quiet evening does not feel restful, and meals get skipped because there is no time. A body kept on alert for months runs down, and the tiredness that follows is real.
David describes this kind in a psalm.
"I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears."
Psalm 6:6David's exhaustion came from sorrow he carried through the night. Nobody could see it, and sleep did not repair it.
The writer of Psalm 119 puts it in one line.
"My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word."
Psalm 119:28The sorrow has no name, and the request is specific: strength that comes from God's word. You are allowed to ask for strength before you have worked out what is wrong.
People who carry a lot often keep going because stopping feels like letting someone down, and because nobody has asked how they are. That can work for a long time. Eventually the tiredness stops responding to sleep.
In Galatians 6, Paul writes about helping other people carry their troubles, and then he warns about getting tired of it. Galatians 6:9 says not to become "weary in doing good," and promises a harvest at the proper time for those who do not give up. Paul expected the tiredness. If you are exhausted from caring for people, the verse applies to you.
When the pace is the problem
Sometimes the tiredness comes from a pace nobody asked you to keep. Ecclesiastes says it plainly.
"Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind."
Ecclesiastes 4:6Ask yourself who set the pace you are keeping. If the answer is you, ask what you are afraid of: letting someone down, or what happens if you stop. Working harder will not remove that fear.
Signs it has gone past a busy season
A busy season ends, and you recover. Burnout does not clear up after a weekend off. These are the signs that tell them apart.
Rest does not refresh you. You sleep or take a day off and come back feeling the same.
You feel distant from people. You care less about things and people you used to care about, and that frightens you.
Small tasks feel enormous. Answering a message takes more effort than it should.
Nothing feels like enough. You finish things and feel nothing about it.
Burnout and depression overlap. If this has gone on for weeks, the post on what the Bible says about depression covers what that looks like and where to turn.
Bible verses for when you are exhausted
Through the prophet Jeremiah, God says this to people who had been worn down by years in exile.
"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint."
Jeremiah 31:25The promise names the weary and attaches no conditions to it.
Psalm 73 is written by a man troubled by what he saw around him. He admits his limit.
"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
Psalm 73:26His strength may run out, and God is still there when it does.
A first step this week
Book the check-up. If the tiredness has lasted for weeks, ask for blood tests and describe how you feel in plain words.
Tell one person. Say "I am more tired than I look." Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." Many people who are exhausted have told nobody how bad it is.
Choose one thing you can leave undone. Pick something small that can wait until next week, and leave it.
Common questions about tiredness and the Bible
Why am I so tired all the time even though I sleep?
Poor-quality sleep, low iron, a thyroid problem, depression, and long-term stress can all cause constant tiredness. Rule out the physical causes first, then look at what you have been carrying for a long time.
Is being tired a sign of weak faith?
No. Jesus was tired from a journey (John 4:6), David wrote that he was worn out from groaning (Psalm 6:6), and Paul wrote to people who were growing weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9).
What is the difference between being tired and burnout?
Tiredness eases with rest. Burnout stays after a weekend off and usually comes with dread of your work and a sense that nothing you do is enough. Burnout and depression can look alike.
What Bible verses help when I am exhausted?
Jeremiah 31:25 says "I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint." Psalm 73:26 admits that flesh and heart may fail and names God as the strength that remains. Galatians 6:9 and John 4:6 are also worth reading.
Does God want me to rest?
Yes. The Sabbath command in Exodus 20 builds a regular stop into the Ten Commandments, and Jesus told His disciples to come away and rest while people were still waiting. The post on what the Bible says about stress covers this in more detail.
Want to go deeper?
This post helps you work out why you are tired and gives you a first step. It does not cover how to sort what you should keep carrying from what you can put down, or how to build a daily routine that holds.
That is what Steadied is for. A practical Bible study on stress: how your mind and body affect each other, how to handle your load, how to look after your body, and how to put together a plan you can keep. Five sections with reflection prompts and a personal summary you can download at the end.
If worry is what keeps you awake, Unrushed looks at where stress comes from. If rest, food, and movement are part of the problem, Temple covers the body side.
